Dash of Spirit - Christmas Jame Gam 2021 - Day 4


This is part 4 of the Christmas 2021 Jame Gam post mortem, if you haven't already read the first 3 days, I recommend you do before reading on.

The Day

The Morning:

I started the morning off with some audio programming and audio tuning around the sound tracks and then started some level balancing with regards to the music as well, the track is tied to the levels length, so when I shortened it I had to rebalance the game. Aside from this, I fixed a lot of little bugs and problems I had found, specifically around the tutorial which I completely broke it some time yesterday.

After Lunch:

After lunch I started with some art, specifically around a sad Santa and a happy Santa which is used throughout the menus. After putting that into the game, I continued on with small tasks and little pieces of clean up / tweaking. I made the trees lightly blow in the wind, points of joy float up to the joy meter now when they are collected, and I added snowfall throughout the game. I don't know why but the continue button has been hell for this game, I use the same one in several other games and it works without issue but in this game, I have broken it repeatedly. At one point it was reading user preferences from another game, not even this one!

The End:

In the evening I found a nasty bug where if you select a villager, then restock supplies you cannot give anything to that villager. Worse, there was no visual or audio feedback of this, your supplies just disappeared. I also did some minor tweaking of the AI so they wouldn't block you inside the store.

Lastly, I wasn't going to do it but decided the game was too hard and I should, I implemented multiple difficulties which you can select from the main menu. The different difficulties simply increases the number of villagers which makes the game simpler because it isn't so hard to find ones that you haven't talked to already or that are not assholes.

I finished off the night with some final audio tweaking.

Wrap Up:

Today was a success again but I feel like I didn't do anything substantial, looking back at the git log it is clear I fixed and tweaked a hell of a lot of things today though. I have posted a Windows/Osx/Linux build hereso feel free to try out the game and please leave any and all feedback.

Tomorrow I am afraid I won't have much time to do anything for the game, there is at least 1 small task I want to do still but it shouldn't take long. That being said, incase I don't have any time tomorrow I have uploaded the game so I can easily submit my entry as is.
